Ring of fire resistance
A ring of fire resistance is a type of ring that appears in NetHack.
Contents
Generation
Wizards may be given a ring of fire resistance as one of the two random rings in their starting inventory.[1]
General stores and jewelers shops can stock rings of fire resistance.
Description
A hero putting on the ring gains the fire resistance property, which lowers or nullifies fire damage from certain attacks, wands and hazards, and flammable items (e.g. scrolls, spellbooks, potions, and globs of green slime) have a 99⁄100 chance per item of being protected from destruction by fire damage.[2] Monsters will not wear this ring.
A hero eating the ring has a 1⁄3 chance of successfully absorbing its magic and gaining intrinsic fire resistance.[3]
Strategy
Like other resistance rings, an identified ring of fire resistance can be worth wearing early on to deal with obstacles such as fire ants or monsters with a wand of fire, and the ring can guard against certain traps such as the magic trap and one of the container trap effects. Even after fireproofing vulnerable armor and obtaining intrinsic fire resistance and/or reflection down the line, the ring may remain somewhat valuable to a hero as a means of protecting flammable inventory, e.g. when dealing with fire traps in Gehennom and dealing with flaming sphere explosions.
Identification
At 200zm, the ring of fire resistance is more expensive than other resistance rings, and it is naturally difficult to test for the ring without some risk to the hero's (or their inventory's) well being. As with many other rings, dropping a spare ring down a sink will also print a distinct message if it is a ring of fire resistance.[4]
History
In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, a ring of fire and cold resistance exists that confers both properties. The ring of fire resistance appears as its own item in Hack for PDP-11, which is also based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, and is included in the initial item list for Hack 1.0.
NetHack 5.0.0 refactors the effects of fire damage on inventory and grants extrinsic sources of fire resistance the ability to prevent their destruction via commit 9942b65d.
Messages
- The hot water faucet flashes brightly for a moment.
- You dropped a ring of fire resistance into a sink[4]—this will prompt you to type-name the ring.
Variants
NetHack variants created prior to NetHack 5.0.0 may or may not adapt the ring of fire resistance's protective abilities introduced in later versions.
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, the ring of shock resistance behaves as it does in NetHack 3.4.3. Ice Mages, Necromancers and Wizards may be given a ring of fire resistance as any of the random rings in their starting inventory.[5][6][7] Flame Mages start with fire resistance, and will never be given a ring of fire resistance this way.[8]
The Lawful Quest has a 4⁄5 chance of generating a ring of fire resistance at the end of one of the lava river branches at level creation—only two of the three possible squares are outside lava themselves.
SporkHack
In SporkHack, the ring of fire resistance behaves as it does in NetHack 3.4.3. SporkHack also uses a partial intrinsic system, allowing the ring of fire resistance and other items that grant extrinsics to remain useful for much longer.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the ring of fire resistance gives a message when worn (though it will not auto-identify), and like all extrinsic sources of fire resistance it also protects open inventory from fire damage. In addition, extrinsic sources of resistance properties are much more desirable due to the temporary intrinsic system.
Message
- Your finger feels cool!
- You put on a ring of fire resistance.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, the ring of fire resistance more useful in the short and long term, e.g. once the hero starts encountering casters that use the fire bolt monster spell—fire resistance and some other intrinsics are partial intrinsics as in SporkHack, and reflection no longer completely protects from the effects of fire rays.
The ring can be worthwhile to safely traverse Gehennom with, since it blocks fire damage from the level itself and the attacks of several monsters within—beware of the ring being stolen if you do not have full intrinsic resistance or a backup extrinsic source!
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, Acid Mages, Corsairs, Electric Mages, Nobles, and Pirates may be given a ring of fire resistance as any of the random rings in their starting inventory
The Undertaker quest goal level is a copy of the Lawful Quest, and has the same 4⁄5 chance of generating a ring of fire resistance at the end of a lava river branch upon level creation.
Hack'EM
In Hack'EM, Flame Mages cannot start with a ring of fire resistance as in SLASH'EM.
Intrinsic and extrinsic resistances function as in EvilHack, along with reflection.
